The IHU Liryc is joining the call issued by the cardiology community for an ambitious public health policy to make cardiovascular prevention a priority in France. This urgent need was highlighted by the institute’s Director General, Dr. Mélèze Hocini, in an op-ed she co-authored in Le Monde.
While cardiovascular disease causes 140,000 deaths a year in France, nearly 80% of these cases could be prevented through targeted prevention efforts.
In response to this situation, the IHU Liryc supports the call for a French version of the European “Safe Hearts” plan to inform the public and policymakers, as well as to expand routine screening and increase funding for heart health, which currently accounts for less than 3% of the health budget.
Medical innovation must be accompanied by a robust prevention policy in order to achieve a lasting reduction in the burden of cardiovascular disease.
